Different stages of pregnancy

  



Pregnancy is the complete phase of a baby's growth in the womb from conception to labour. The babies grow each day and the mother undergoes lots of changes both physically and emotionally. From the day of the last mensuration period till the delivery of the baby takes 40 weeks. There are different stages of pregnancy in these 40 weeks. The first sign of pregnancy is missed period. Once your period is missed for more than 10 days then you can go for a pregnancy test. Your gynaecologist confirms your pregnancy through the blood test and the ultrasound scan. The first day of the last mensuration date is taken and from that, the delivery date is estimated. The initial estimation may vary since there could be any complications and changes for both mother and the baby. 0 – 9 months is the pregnancy phase.

Three stages of pregnancy



There are 3 phases of pregnancy, they are

First trimester [ 0 to 12 weeks]

Second trimester [ 13 to 27 weeks]

Third trimester [ 24 to 40 weeks]

The growth of the baby differs in each stage and each week and the mother also faces a lot of changes in her body till she attains labour. Let us see in more detail about each trimester. Generally, the duration of pregnancy is 280 days which is 40 days. The baby born before 37 weeks is called preterm delivery and when the delivery extends more than 40 weeks is called post-term delivery.



First Trimester


The first trimester starts from the last mensuration period date before the missed periods. In the first trimester, the doctors confirm the pregnancy the baby starts the new beginning, and in this stage, the heartbeat of the baby can be heard through the ultrasound scan.

                          

What happens to the baby?

In the first trimester, the baby starts the journey of growth from the fertilized ovum to the fetus. The fetus grows about 6 cm in the length at the end of 12 weeks. In the first trimester, the baby’s heart starts to beat and internal organs such as the brain, stomach, lungs, and intestines start to grow. The tinny bud has arms and legs starting to grow. Baby’s nervous systems start to change, the spine starts to develop

What happens to your body?

In the initial stage of pregnancy, the symptoms differ for each woman. For some, the first 3 months would be healthy and glowing and for some, it is the most crucial period. In this stage, the mother would face a lot of symptoms like

These are some of the symptoms of the first trimester. Around 25% of the women have light bleed spotting this is due to the implantation of the egg in the uterus.

Second Trimester

The second trimester begins from the 13th week till the 27th week. In this period nausea, tiredness, and other worst symptoms in the first trimester usually take a break in the second trimester. In this phase, there is fast growth in the baby and also there are a lot of physical changes in the mother. In the middle of the second trimester, the doctor can able to find the gender of the baby inside the womb.

What happens to the baby?

In the second-trimester baby grows tinny toes and fingers can be seen through the scan, hair growth starts, baby’s outer skin is protected with the vernix caseosa. At the beginning of the second trimester, the mother can able to feel the movements, not a strong move but a quickening. The baby kicks, rolls, and moves from side to side.

 By the end of the second-trimester moves and kicks are felt by the mother. In this phase, the baby starts to hear the sound and responds to the sound around the mother. The baby's eyelids and eyes are completely grown and it opens the eyes. Baby hiccups can be felt like a slight jerk in the belly. At the end of the second trimester, the baby grows 280 cm in length and 900 grams. The placenta is fully developed inside the womb and this is the halfway through the pregnancy.

These are some of the symptoms which usually second-trimester mothers will face. and these are most common due to the changes in the pregnancy hormone and due to the baby's weight increases, you are getting backaches and cramps.

 

Third trimester

This is going to be the most exciting phase of the pregnancy, yes you are going to hold the baby in your hands in just a few weeks. The third trimester starts from the 28th week and extends till the 40th week. In this phase, the baby completely grows and moves its position, and gets ready for labour.

What happens to the baby?

In the third trimester, the baby grows fastly, and the lungs, brain, bones, and other organs are completely grown. By the end of 36 weeks, the baby moves its position by placing its head downward. In this trimester the baby sucks its thumb, cries, listens, opens its eyes, and looks around. The baby kicks and moves downward and gets ready for the delivery. When the baby’s skull grows up to 10cms then the mother can expect the delivery at any time.

In the third trimester, the mother has a lot of tension and labour fear. Apart from this, her body undergoes many changes like,

This phase is going to be hard but it is a short period only to get your baby in your hands.
