What is a test tube baby?

In 1978’s the term tube baby was used in England first tube baby was born, and later in 1983 with the Assisted Reproduction Techiqnue test tube pregnancy is known as Vitro Fertilization IVF. A test-tube baby is a baby which is conceived through Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In common words, test-tube babies and IVF are the same.

The term Vitro means glass, the conception done in the laboratory, in the olden days the sperm and the eggs are fertilized in the glass vessel that is a petri dish once the egg is fertilized and the embryo starts to grow it is placed in the uterus using the catheter. This is the reason for the name test-tube baby. In the ’80s and ’90s test tube pregnancy is something rare and people were lack of knowledge about this. Whereas now the rate of infertility is increased rapidly with the advanced technology IVF’s become more common and many couples after years of infertility for various reasons are choosing this IVF option for pregnancy.

The process of test-tube baby

A test-tube baby which is commonly called IVF is a set of procedures that has to be done in repeated cycles until the pregnancy is confirmed. IVF can be repeated for any number of cycles for most the couple before the 8th cycle of IVF pregnancy will be confirmed and for lucky ones, it happens in the first cycle. By repeatedly doing an IVF cycle there is a lot of chance of positive pregnancy. The success rate of IVF is from 30% to 35%.

The test tube baby process takes quite a long time, after the complete check-up of both male and female body conditions only doctors choose this option of pregnancy for them. It is a five-step process, let us see it in detail.

Stimulation

Stimulation is the first step. In the process of IVF, healthy good quality eggs are needed. Generally, IVF patients are aged or have ovulation problems so stimulation is done for them. The female has been given fertility drugs for the follicular study. The eggs are monitored on the alternative days through the ultrasound pelvic scan. When she attains a good quality number of eggs then the next step is taken.

Egg retrieval

Eggs are retrieved from the female ovaries. The retrieval process is something painful for some. Eggs with follicles are retrieved with the needle through the vagina from the ovary by suction method.

Sperm collection

On the same day of the egg retrieval for the female, the sperm sample is collected from the male for the next step

Fertilization in the laboratory

Once the eggs and the sperms are collected the doctor combines both in the dish for fertilization. This combined sperm and eggs are kept under an incubator for some period for fertilization. The doctor checks for the growth of the embryo.

Fertilized eggs into the uterus

Once the embryo has enough growth it is placed in the uterus. The embryos from the test tube are placed in the uterus through the fine catheter, the catheter is nothing but a soft tube that helps to place the embryo in the uterus. For the implantation of the embryo into the walls of the uterus, she will be monitored and suggested to follow the medications. Usually, one or more embryos are transferred to have a successful pregnancy.

This is how the test tube baby pregnancy takes place. There are several reasons for the couples who prefer the test tube baby and there is also more risk in this type of pregnancy one has to be ready for everything and prior counselling is given to them before choosing this method of pregnancy.
