What is a test tube baby?

A test-tube baby is a baby which is conceived through Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In common words, test-tube babies and IVF are the same.

The process of test-tube baby



A test-tube baby which is commonly called IVF is a set of procedures that has to be done in repeated cycles until the pregnancy is confirmed. IVF can be repeated for any number of cycles for most the couple before the 8th cycle of IVF pregnancy will be confirmed and for lucky ones, it happens in the first cycle. By repeatedly doing an IVF cycle there is a lot of chance of positive pregnancy. The success rate of IVF is from 30% to 35%.

Stimulation

Stimulation is the first step. In the process of IVF, healthy good quality eggs are needed. Generally, IVF patients are aged or have ovulation problems so stimulation is done for them. The female has been given fertility drugs for the follicular study. The eggs are monitored on the alternative days through the ultrasound pelvic scan. When she attains a good quality number of eggs then the next step is taken.

Egg retrieval



Eggs are retrieved from the female ovaries. The retrieval process is something painful for some. Eggs with follicles are retrieved with the needle through the vagina from the ovary by suction method.

Sperm collection

On the same day of the egg retrieval for the female, the sperm sample is collected from the male for the next step

Fertilization in the laboratory

Once the eggs and the sperms are collected the doctor combines both in the dish for fertilization. This combined sperm and eggs are kept under an incubator for some period for fertilization. The doctor checks for the growth of the embryo.

Fertilized eggs into the uterus

Once the embryo has enough growth it is placed in the uterus. The embryos from the test tube are placed in the uterus through the fine catheter, the catheter is nothing but a soft tube that helps to place the embryo in the uterus. For the implantation of the embryo into the walls of the uterus, she will be monitored and suggested to follow the medications. Usually, one or more embryos are transferred to have a successful pregnancy.
